Grant Winners 2009

MANC provided two grant winners with $1000 each for their projects that are aimed at helping improve the health of people in the Memphis area. Due to fundraising projects we are excited to be able to provide grants annually.

The winners and their projects are:

Harlyn Hardin

"'Live Empowered': African American Program-Learning to Thrive and Prevent Diabetes"

Brief statement of purpose of project being proposed: To increase awareness about the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of making healthy lifestyles choices, such as additional exercise and healthier eating.

“Clinical Use of Donor Human Milk in Pediatric Care”

Brief Statement of purpose of project being proposed: To educate and familiarize pediatric health care providers on the availability and benefits of pasteurized banked donor human milk in the feeding of critically infants and children.

Institution/Agency where the project would be conducted/grant funds would be utilized: Pediatric Grand Rounds at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center

April Meeting

There will be an open member/board meeting on Thursday, April 23rd at Fresh Slices Restaurant. Dinner will start at 5:30PM and the meeting will start at 6:00PM.

If you are interested in getting more involved in the good things that MANC does, please feel free to attend our board meeting. Find out what we do, and if you would consider a board position for next year, let me know. Open positions are President-Elect, Treasurer, Grants Chair, Fundraising Chair-Elect, and Nominating Committee.

Call for Nominations!

It’s that time of year again when MANC is looking for energetic and creative people to run for office. Please consider giving a little time to serve on the MANC Board for 2009-2010. We especially encourage new MANC members to get involved – it’s great for networking!

As an organization that strives to educate the public about nutrition and health promotion, MANC provides numerous rewarding experiences for those that volunteer. The offices-at-large for next year are listed below with a brief description. Officers are asked to attend monthly or bi-monthly meetings or as decided upon by the Board.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact one or all of the Nominating Committee members listed below. Thanks so much for continuing to help MANC thrive!

I. President-elect: 3-year term

First Year: Serves as President-elect: arranges member meetings throughout the year and assists President as needed.
Second Year: Serves as President: works with other Board members to provide nutrition education opportunities for the public, oversees administrative duties, and assists the new President-elect with member meetings.
Third Year: Serves as Nominating Committee Chair: develops (with the nominating committee) a ballot of candidates to serve on the MANC Board for the upcoming year, prepares, receives, and authenticates ballot and presents winners to acting Board.

II. Treasurer: 2 year term. Keep and provide accurate records of all financial transactions of MANC. File all reports required by federal state and local regulations. Collect and disperse all monies with the board’s approval.

III. Fundraising Chair-Elect: 2-year term

First Year: Serves as Fundraising Chair-elect: assists Fundraising Chair with annual fundraising activities.
Second Year: Serves as Fundraising Chair: responsible for administering fundraising activities for MANC as agreed upon by the Board.

IV. Grants Chair: 1-year term. Provides community with opportunity to apply for MANC grants. Administers selection of grant recipients in conjunction with MANC Board.

V. Nominating Committee: 1-year term(2 at-large positions) Assists Nominating Committee Chair with development of ballot of candidates for upcoming year.

Happy Registered Dietitian Day!

Today is the 2nd annual Registered Dietitian Day! Have a good one!

March is also National Nutrition Month. The Memphis Area Nutrition Council will be celebrating with a booth at the Public Library on Saturday March 28th from 11AM-4PM. Feel free to stop by and collect some fun nutrition information!

NOTICE OF GRANT FUNDS AVAILABLE

The Memphis Area Nutrition Council announces the availability of grant monies for the year 2009. Any community nutrition-related project with the potential to positively impact the nutritional status of the people in the greater Memphis area will be considered. Applicants must not have been awarded a grant in the last 5 years to qualify.

Examples of appropriate projects include, but are not limited to:

Purchasing, developing, or printing nutrition education materials
Purchasing nutrition-related materials
Funds (including honorarium and travel expenses) for speakers on nutrition-related topics
Research and/or service projects with a community nutrition focus

Guidelines for Submission and Review of Grant Proposals

Proposals must be postmarked by March 23, 2009.
Applicants will be notified in early May 2009.
Proposals will be judged on specific criteria including the proposal’s community nutrition emphasis, innovation/creativity, and potential impact on the community.
Projects will be assigned priority for funding based on highest averaged scores from the grant committee members.
